Bunge-Viterra Merger

Alberta Grains market and policy department continues to work with partners to ensure that the impacts of the proposed Bunge-Viterra merger on farmers is understood.

We met with the Competition Bureau prior to the release of their review of the merger and helped fund a study to aid Transport Canada’s review on the potential effects of the proposed merger on the grain sector in western Canada. We meet regularly with government officials across all levels, as the Canadian regulatory review is set to wrap up by June 22, 2024 for a final decision.

“The proposed merger brings to the forefront concerns about market concentration and its potential ripple effects on grain producers” said Tara Sawyer, Alberta Grains Chair. “Competition in the grain sector will directly influence concerns producers have raised regarding transparent, consistent, and efficient delivery contracts and market information.”
