South Saskatchewan Regional Plan 10-Year Review
In August, the Government of Alberta announced a review of the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP); introduced in 2014 to establish a vision and economic, environmental and social outcomes for the region, meant to guide decision-makers for the next 50 years. The 10-year-review will assess the plan’s ongoing relevancy and effectiveness in addressing the region’s evolving challenges. Alberta Grains submitted its response, emphasizing the critical need for stronger protections for agriculture. Despite the region’s growth, primary agriculture faces significant pressures, including land conversion, fragmentation, and land-use conflicts. Alberta Grains called for clearer priorities to safeguard the sector’s future and for improved indicators to better measure the plan’s effectiveness.
