Government of Alberta Water Availability Consultation

At the end of October, Alberta’s Environment and Protected Areas department launched consultations to gather input on increasing water availability and improve the water management system in Alberta. The existing priority and licence seniority system in Alberta—based on the first in time, first in right principle—is not proposed to change. Farmers are encouraged to provide feedback on topics such as measuring and reporting water use, rainwater clarification, alternative water sources, and opportunities to improve water allocation and transfers. The survey’s deadline is January 10, 2025, and the feedback will be reviewed to inform potential policy changes in 2025 aimed to improve access and management of water in the province.
