Government of Alberta Announces Water Storage Review
The Government of Alberta (GoA) has initiated a comprehensive review of over 100 potential sites for dams and water storage infrastructure to address future water needs. This study aims to improve water security, support agriculture, manage drought and flood risks, and sustain economic growth. Assessments will consider hydrology, environmental and social impacts, and cost-effectiveness, with results expected in Spring 2025. Alberta Grains supports these studies as it can help towards maintaining and expanding further opportunities for irrigation.
The GoA is also conducting a scoping and feasibility study for the Ardley Dam, about 40 kilometres east of Red Deer. The study aims to be finished by 2026 and will explore potential impacts and benefits from a new dam to irrigation, water security and flood protection for the Red Deer River Basin.
